CADILLAC FLEETWOOD BROUGHAM |
|
|
The earliest vehicle to bear the Cadillac name was a humble single cylinder model, which was designed by Henry Leland and cost $ 750 US in 1903. Cadillac were responsible for a continuing line of ever more improved designs from that time and were successful in selling in quite large numbers. Ford and Oldsmobile influenced the early models from Cadillac and the marque was incorporated into General Motors in 1909 where after more in- house designs were used. Large engine capacity and multi-cylinder layouts were adopted by Cadillac from early in the companies life. The first of many V8s appeared in 1915 in the firm of a 5.1 litre side valve. 1930 saw the introduction of a 185 BHP V16 of 7400cc, the following year this was joined by a V12 measuring 6 Litres. Power brakes and ride control were first used by Cadillac in this period and Cadillac were establishing themselves as the luxury division of the corporation. This particular model is powered by the diesel version of the 350 cubic inch V8 which is also used on other General Motors products. It is true to say that this power unit is more an Oldsmobile than a Cadillac and the diesel range were introduced when petrol engines were suffering poor public image on the grounds of high emissions of so called "Green house gasses" and high fuel consumption. It should be noted, that although the diesel produces a smoky exhaust,it has less of the more harmful contents. The diesel models incorporate a novel electrical mechanism, to enhance the driver friendly aspect, when starting up from cold. While most diesels employ "Glow Plugs" in the cylinder head, the glow plugs fitted to Cadillacs are 6 volt types fitted to an otherwise 12 volt system. The use of a glow plug controller, which switches the glow plugs on and off at the rate of one cycle every few seconds, both protects the glow plugs from continuous exposure to 12 volts and allows rapid warm up conditions prior to initially cranking the engine. Air conditioning, automatic transmission and virtually electrical everything is taken for granted on Cadillacs, this model is additionally equipped with an electrically driven air compressor to supply air to the rear shock absorber legs, for automatic self levelling of the car under varying load conditions.
