DAIMLER EL 24

Daimler EL 24

POINTS OF TECHNICAL INTEREST

The 7 bearing 6 cylinder engine was gradually evolved by Daimler and was a direct development of the 2.7 Litre unit of the earlier LQ20 and EL20. The power unit was increased to 3.3 Litre in 1936 and the OHV design follows established Daimler practice, but is working near it's limits with such a large and heavy body. The transmission is also typical Daimler, with a 4 speed epicyclic gearbox which is pre selected by lever control, with the speed change actuated with a pedal. No clutch is provided, but the transmission is connected via a fluid flywheel coupling, providing a smooth link between the engine and gearbox, with final drive by worm and pinion rear axle. Braking systems were generally mechanical in the 30's, but Daimler was an early pioneer of vacuum servo assistance and this car is so equipped, being also provided with a front / rear braking compensator. Leaf spring suspension both front and rear gives a good ride, and being a Daimler, the chassis is also fitted with an auto lubrication system, with lubrication piped to key points from a central reservoir. A 4 point hydraulic jacking system is also built into the chassis, making lifting the car a much simpler matter.

POINTS OF GENERAL INTEREST

The Daimler EL24 was produced alongside the ES24, with the EL24 generally being fitted with a saloon body. A small number were provided with Limousine coachwork, this example is fitted with a limousine body by James Mulliner and is one of only two such vehicles in running condition known to survive. According to the register, a third Mulliner is in Switzerland, but is unrestored and in very poor condition. Altogether 710 examples of the EL/ES24 were produced between late 1936 and 1940 when car production stopped. This vehicle was found on the stage of a disused theatre in Bristol in 1996, where it had stood since about 1980 and was in virtually "scrap yard" condition. The car was brought back to Calne, then taken in lots of pieces to Wootten Bassett, to be painstakingly restored over the next 4 1/2 years by Mr Colin Harper. Many searches for spare parts took place during that period, but as can be seen, the process has been successful and provided a shining example of a very rare motor car.
