FORD MODEL A |
By the time that the Model"T" came to the end of it's production life in 1927, over 15000000 examples had been produced worldwide. The design was by then, very dated and in need of replacement. This model was introduced in 1928 and the new car had an increase in engine volume of almost 400cc, a higher compression ratio, improved gas flow and more modern carburation and ignition systems. The improvements gave an output of 40 BHP which was exactly twice the power that the Mode 1 T developed. The pedal controlled epicyclic gearbox as used on the Model T, now gave way to a more conventional 3 speed lay shaft transmission, with a clutch and a more normal control layout. The braking system was also greatly improved, with mechanically connected brakes to all 4 wheels. The transverse leaf springing was retained, but things like the coachwork, styling, internal accommodation and lighting systems were fully up to date for the time. The terms "Tudor" and "Fordor" were used on 2 and 4 door models respectively. A smaller capacity model the AF of 2033cc was also offered.
While the Model A was no doubt a great technical improvement on the previous product, it was not really a success in the United Kingdom. The main reason being, that the tax laws at the time, attracted a much higher charge from large engined vehicles than the smaller British types. The charge being directly related to nominal Horsepower. The fuel consumption was also higher and people could not afford to run these larger vehicles. Ford only assembled 14516 of this type in the UK up to 1932. Between 1932 and 1934 an improved type, the Model AB was introduced (everyone referred to this as the Model B) But even this only achieved a total UK production of 8784 Units. A much smaller car the Model Y of only 933cc was the answer and Ford produced 157668 examples Model Y's at the Dagenham factory between 1932 and 1937. A model Y can be seen elsewhere in this collection.
