PLYMOUTH FURY |
Like many of its contemporaries, the Plymouth Fury enjoys a more advanced specification than many UK Models of the same era. Use of electrically powered accessories was already more established on American models and the Fury, with its electric/hydraulic mechanism for erecting the soft top was no exception. Electrical power was supplied by a large alternator with built in semi-conductor rectifiers. The styling was a little more subdued for 1961 than in previous years and although dated now, it very much reflected tastes of the times. Control of the Chrysler Torque-Flite Automatic transmission functions were achieved from push buttons set into the dash panel, these buttons were linked by cable to the gearbox. The instruments were also streamlined and matched to the general lines of the car. The powerful V8 engine can supply a 3 figure maximum speed, but still return 17 MPG. This is quite respectable for a large car, which weighed in at just over 1.5 Tons. The car is well mannered however and is pleasing to drive. The model was produced both in the USA and by Chrysler of Canada, who made an export version in right hand drive.
The Plymouth Company originated from the Maxwell Briscoe Motor Company of Newcastle Indiana. Absorbed by Chrysler in 1923 and the first Plymouth appeared in 1928. The Fury model was introduced much later on. The 1961 Fury was also available in two and four door, Hard Top form with 14 different colour choices. Like the Savoy and Belvedere models, the Fury was offered with the V8 described above or with a 6 Cylinder engine of 3682cc. To purchase a Fury in 1961, required £1,872 plus £781. 2. 6. a total of £2,653. 2. 6. (£2,653.12 1/2) This was a lot of money in those days, when a Vauxhall Cresta cost £1077. 15. 10 and a Mini Estate would set you back a mere £623. 0. 0.
